I don’t think that I’ve seen a more elegant website as Hot House’s Backroom — and elegant is not a word I’d expect to use from one of the nastiest producers of dirty porn. Hot House Entertainment was founded in 1993 by director Steven Scarborough. Since then they have released videos under five different labels: Hot House Video, Plain Wrapped, Club Inferno, Pack Attack, and Hot House Backroom Exclusive Videos. Well-known for its masculine men and hardcore scenes, Hot House has long been a favourite of mine — men like Vinnie D’Angelo, Tyler Riggz, Alex Collack, Francesco D’Macho have gotten me off time and again. But Hot House isn’t just a producer of daddy and hardcore fetish porn, they have a hot selection of muscle guys in their twenties and thirties, and they like mixing them up. The Hot House website has two member’s areas: The Backroom and Club Inferno Dungeon. They are two separate sites. Dungeon is geared towards hard-assed players; so you’ll expect to find lots of fisting, dildos, other butt play scenarios, and more leather men and BDSM scenes. - The Hot House member’s area is really a pleasure to navigate — it’s well thought out and the design is flawless executed. When you first land in the member’s area you’re presented with the latest Backroom Videos, Scenes, and Solo and Action Photos. On the left sidebar, surfers can navigate to past monthly Backroom updates; you can check out any video in the Hot House catalogue; you can search for your favourite model; and you can search by themes like orgies, dildos, jack off buddies, or daddies. I did notice the absence of a Home button, but I eventually figured out that clicking on the site’s top banner always took me back to the member’s homepage.
I mentioned the Backroom’s elegance at the top. The Backroom uses shades of grey with the signature Hot House orange thrown in for accent. It really is a stunning looking site. The photos and videos open up in tastefully designed players and pop-up windows. When you’re looking at photo galleries, thumbnails are displayed on the right side of the screen, and when clicked they feature the enlarged photo on the left side. A hands-free slide show is also available. You will need both Flash and Javascript enabled to fully enjoy the Backroom.
- Standout Features
- One of the best features of the Hot House Backroom site is their video collection. Hot House actually releases their videos to members before they begin selling them as hard copy DVDs. So when you’re seeing a new release video on the Hot House Backroom site, you’re seeing it before anyone else. I really like this idea. Most studios try and recuperate as much money in DVD sales before releasing the content on their website, but I think Hot House has the right idea — website members are your loyal customers, why not reward them. And if you really enjoy a DVD and want a hard copy, your Premium Membership gets you a 50% discount; so a $59.95 DVD is only costing you $29.95. That’s a great deal.
Hot House features some of the hottest men in the business, so their models are a close second in the standout feature department. In the past, I have tended to focus more on Hot House’s daddy porn and hardcore videos because that’s what turns me on; but I was pleasantly surprised to see the variety of guys in their Backroom, including a fair number of younger, jock types. So whether you like nasty-talking daddies like Vinnie D’Angelo, good-looking and hairy muscle men like Ross Hurston, guy-next-door types like Jackson Wild, muscle jocks like CJ Knight, or mammothly hung men like Chad Hunt, you’ll find them all in the Backroom.
The Backroom also lets you add movies, scenes, or models to your favourites menu. And in the case of models, when you revisit your favourties, you’re presented with all of their photo and video appearances on the site. I liked this feature a lot. - Negatives
- I was disappointed with Backroom’s photo sizes. By today’s standards the Backroom pictures are small at 555 pixels on the long side. Older photos are watermarked across the middle of the photo with the Hot House logo; but newer photos have a watermark band across the bottom of the photos which doesn’t impede your enjoyment of the photo. I’d be happier if Hot House would increase the size of their photos to something more modern like 800 pixels on the long side and get rid of those pesky watermarks on the older photos.
The Backroom videos are also a little on the small side (330 x 440 pixels) and they’re only available as streaming Flash videos. You will not be able to save or download these videos, but Hot House does give members a 50% discount on DVD purchases. You can enlarge the videos to full screen, but they do lose considerable quality in this mode if you’re sitting right in front of the computer. However, if you’re lying on your bed on the other side of the room with your dick in your hand, for example, the full screen mode looks pretty good, and I’d have no problem getting off. - The Last Word
- Hot House Backroom is a phenomenal site and gives members excellent value for their membership. In spite of their short comings with photo and video sizes, The Backroom is so well designed and packed with features that it is still a good site. However, larger photos and videos would make it a great site. I loved the way I could add models to my favourites so they’re waiting for me (with their new updates) when I get back. And Hot House keeps the Backroom updated with lots of photos and videos. I also really liked the way they pushed their content into the Backroom and the Dungeon. It gives you the choice of being a bad boy or a filthy dirty pig boy. And finally, getting access to brand new content before anyone else is a huge plus with this site. Hot House’s Backroom is a site that all other gay porn studios should aspire after.
